“I was in a “photo-funk” before I spent a few days with Mary and Ken doing their photo workshop/tour. I was so surprised that Mary had been able to discern so much about me from our brief telephone conversation. As we began our first day of shooting, Mary had already prepared some helpful guiding material for me and was asking me thoughtful questions and really listening to me. When I reviewed my images at the end of the first day, there was such a clear boundary between the images pre-M and K and when I started shooting with them; it was like suddenly I was present. This individualized, customized, flexible type of programme/itinerary was even more than I could have hoped for. During our three days together I benefited from M and K’s hospitality, their generous and warm spirits, and their combined years of experience as photographers and artists. They communicate very differently about various aspects of creating images, but for me the words they both use were very meaningful, and were supplemented by hands on demos and written guidance. In a short time I was shooting with much more excitement and was more satisfied with the images I was creating. The time I spent with M and K was really the heart of my time in Hawaii… I couldn’t imagine spending less than 3 days because there isn’t a single place we visited that I would have wanted to have missed. “For several years now, my wife and I have been traveling to Kona on the Big Island to stay for one week each time. I always bring my cameras and try to take the best photographs possible. There are books to refer to in order to find beautiful places, but its tough with poorly marked roads and “No Trespassing” signs. On this past trip, we decided to stay closer to the East side for a few days to make it a shorter drive to Volcano National Park. In searching for possible workshop/tours, I came upon the “Hawaii Photo Retreat” . Upon e-mail inquiry, I received very friendly and informative responses. They helped direct us to a place to stay and where to pick up supplies. In meeting our guides, I found that Mary and Ken Goodrich are not only outstanding photographers, but excellent people as well. It was like an old friendship that was to be rekindled. The tour took us to places that we would not have been able to find alone. My non-photographer wife even had a great time and took some great shots. We took a two day tour that ended up in several different photographic locations. We also were able to sample different restaurants that we have never been to before. The photo trip made this trip to the Big Island a memorable one and one where I was able to take some photographs that I am extremely happy with. If you have time to spend with Ken and Mary, it will be time well spent. ”
